Vacuum your rug. This is pretty obvious. Although it won’t get rid of any stains it will make the following steps easier to do.

If you have serious stains consider investing in a hot water extraction machine. If you search for carpet cleaner on your favorite search engine you are going to find carpet/rug cleaners, which look like vacuums. Although they may advertise themselves as “steam” cleaners, these products do not use any steam.
If, for some reason, you buy a hot water extraction machine and it doesn’t work you can always rent one. If you don’t want to buy one in the first place you can rent one as well. The machines that are available for rent are more powerful and the same ones used by professional rug cleaning services.
If you don’t have the time or just don’t want to clean your rug you can always hire someone to clean the rug for you. Keep in mind that you are essentially paying for convenience because you can get the same results as they do.
